Geeky weaves!

I really liked the woven gift-topper I made a few weeks ago and thought it looked really pixely! Just perfect for space invaders…

I think it would make a cool little project for big kids and grown-ups! All you need are strips of paper and some sticky tape.

Woven space invaders

You could use them as gift-toppers, or make a card from them or stick them in a frame. They require no skill to make…just a bit of patience…

If you fancy a change from rainbow then neon works well too!

Have you worked on a project lately that you are pleased with…if so, tell me about it (leave a comment below)!

Off topic: Thanks for all your comments/emails regarding Macrame. Tutorials coming up in July/September so keep an eye out for that!

How-to

I used multicoloured strips for the horizontal weaves and white for the vertical ones*.

1) Cut out lots of paper strips. Mine were 5mm wide. Adjust the length of the strips to suit your project. Longer is better…at least then you can chop them down if need be.

2) I lay all my white strips on a table top and put a length of sticky tape at the top of the strips to keep them secure.

3) Weave away

4) Once you have all your strips in place you will probably need to put some sticky tape on the back to keep all the pieces in place. With this in mind I worked all the designs back to front so that I could put the sticky tape on strips without having to turn them over. There are some ‘back-to-front’ photos below for you to follow!

If you need a hand, leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you asap

*Top-left design requires 18 vertical strips
*Top-right design requires 10 vertical strips
*Bottom-left design requires 14 vertical strips
*Bottom-right design requires 13 vertical strips

  1. Thanks Helen and Clumsy L. Hope you have a good holiday Helen. We’re off to France for a week soooon. Can’t wait! Good luck with the long plane ride. We’ve done quite a few of those…to Australia and back…with the kids. An endurance test for sure! x

  2. These are fabulous! I can’t imagine a little boy or girl who wouldn’t just love them. I have to say that I love a bit of twine too and your bright green combo is super x

  3. That is WAYYYY cool! We just had our son’s 1st b’day & I have to say, I can’t wait til he’s into something other than Thomas. Space Invaders would be a super fun party theme. Love those zingy colours. x

  4. Thanks for all the nice comments as usual…you lot are nice eh!

Lisa, my sons are 4&2 and not into space invaders particularly…it’s just me! Dragons, dinosaurs, slime & poo more their style!

Lili….I agree, the reverse looks cool too x

  5. Such a wonderful idea! I found this JUST in time for my 2-year anniversary with my geeky sweetie.

Thank you so much for sharing! I’m excited to look through your archives!.

  6. Hi Blinds…thanks for the kind comments. This craft is quite tricky so more aimed at older kids or even adults. I made mine and framed them…they look very cool ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Cheerio for now ^_^

  7. HI, love this idea and something we’d love to feature in one of our next boxes…www.toucanbox.com, although might be a bit hard for our target demographic. What age do you think this would be suitable for?

    All the best,
    Virginie

  8. Hi Virginie…I would say this is a project aimed at teens/adults. It’s a bit fiddly so too hard for young ones ^_^

  9. Wow, Kate! This is a great idea for greeting cards, bookmarks, gift tags, too !

And, instead of cutting out all these strips, one can buy & use Quilling strips – decrease one’s workload ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love the Potential this craft has. One can use Any Crossstitch pattern to create any number of intricate patterns for wall mountings, etc. Especially for the needle-challenged ๐Ÿ˜‰

This is one project I’m getting on to right away !

  10. Hi Meenaksi, I saw the quilling strips only a few weeks ago and thought exactly the same as you. Thanks for the kind comments. Kate ^_^

  11. Hi I loved this, and made the weave very successfully except for one thing: I had to change the width of the paper strips because 5mm was quite thin, and wanted mine thicker. Even so the final product ended up being a bit small! anyhow, wonderful idea and fantastic blog

  12. Hi Elaine. This doesn’t come with a template. All you need are some strips of paper and the plans at the foot of the post.

  13. I have been exploring for a little bit for any high-quality articles or weblog posts in this kind of
area . Exploring in Yahoo I ultimately stumbled upon this website.

Studying this information So i am satisfied to convey that I have an incredibly good uncanny feeling I discovered just what I
needed. I such a lot indubitably will make certain to do not overlook this website and provides it a look on a constant basis.
