Macramé anyone?

I‘ve always wanted a macramé owl….always! So after a little bit of practice I have one! I have to trim his tail down a little but otherwise he is pretty much complete.

Macramé owl

Macramé seems to be making a comeback at the moment and I really enjoyed making this so thought I might put together a group of tutorials if anyone is interested? If you are, leave a comment below and I’ll get on the case!

Macramé owl

This owl was made from shoelaces. I have just ordered some really long neon shoelaces for another macrame project so watch this space!

The pattern for this owl came from here if you fancy a go. Happy Monday everyone.

  1. Hello, I love your blog that i have recently discovered : you have wonderful ideas and the design and the pictures are very very nice. I often visit you, and if you have a little bit time, you can visit my main blog, BlueLuenn, and my second very young blog which is especially for kids, http://lesloulousdelou.canalblog.com/
Sorry, but they are all in french, and sorry again for my english, i hope i am understandable. Bye.

  2. Hi Louluenn…thanks for the comment. As for your blogs, I’ll pop over now! No need to apologies for your English…it’s perfect (which is more than can be said for my French!).

  3. I’ve just started putting together today a board on macrame on Pintrest. That’s a great coincidence! So I am most definitely interested! Thanks 🙂

  4. I love what you did for the colors on this. I know I’d be interested in macrame tutorials, especially modern interpretations of old designs.

  5. Great…I’ll get my thinking hat on. GM: modern interpretations of old designs is exactly what I had in mind…also tutorials to learn the basics. I’m sure it won’t happen overnight but certainly something I would like to make a start on in the coming months. Thanks you lot x

  6. That would be so much fun! This really takes me back to ‘After School Activities’ circa 1980 when I first learned how to make macrame – so a refresher course is definitely needed. Love those happy colours. Thanks Kate!

  7. Astrid & Lisa…your comments about making macrame in the eighties made me smile. The only time I made macrame was at school….so that would have been a good while ago now! My sister and I pinched all my mums embroidery silks to make friendship bracelets. I remembering selling them at school for next to nothing! Probably cost more for my mum to buy the silks in the first place! 🙂

  8. Hi there. You have just made my day. I have been wanting to make a macrame owl for ages. My Grandmother had a very curious looking retro one in her home in the 70’s. I always loved it.
Thank you so much, and you site is incredible. Jo

  9. I love your macrame owl! I would love a tutorial, I think my friend Kim would love one of these!

  10. Here’s a challenge for you….I would LOVE a macrame parrot. I do love the owl, but the colours seem more parroty to me. Don’t hate me ;D

  11. Hi Kelly…your parrot comment made me laugh…I’d never thought of it and now all I see is parrot…hehe!!! I can see I’m gonna have to invest in some brown shoelaces! x

  12. I remember seeing macrame owls hanging from walls when I was growing up in the 70’s and 80’s! I love your colorful modern take! What a great idea to use shoelaces.

  13. I like the tail as it is – a little wild and wispy! What is the approximate finished height?

  14. I also like macrame but have not done any in a long time. Glad to see that more people are interested. Thanks for the outside of the box idea of using shoe laces. I already have down loaded the tute for the owl. I really like owls. Thanks

  15. I recently discovered your blog and I LOVE IT!!!

Thank you for the tutorials offer. I wanted to learn to macrame for a long time. So I’m really looking forward to them.

And I love owls, too. Need to learn how to make the macrame one ASAP. 🙂

  16. Oh, another fabulous owl! That deserves another WooHOOT!!!! It would be a delight to learn how to macrame, and I already have a stash of colourful laces (though they’re probably too short).

  17. Hi Lkuhr,

It’s 13cm from stick to stick The shoelaces are 3mm thick. If you want a bigger owl then use thicker cord. The shoelaces I used were 100cm long…I bought them ages ago for the boys to use with their threading cards…they were just about long enough. You can buy them from ebay:

Thanks for all the comments 🙂 I will definitely put together some tutorials so watch this space…may need a few weeks to get my act together! 🙂

  18. Oh my goodness, I’m torn between laughing and getting a little weepy with nostalgia. My mom used to make macrame owls that looked just like this (only not quite so colorful) back in the ’70s when I was little. And I’ve heard stories about how my husband’s older brother made macrame creations like this to sell at church sales around the same time. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

  19. What a lovely example of macrame! I love the colours. I’m looking to learn to make a planter for my cousin, and looking for instructions. This is great colour inspiration for me. Thanks so much!!

  20. WOW! I’m always looking for fun ways to enhance my students’ fine motor skills and knotting engages them so readily. They’ll love this!

  21. I teach textiles at high school and always finish the term with macramé friendship bracelets. The students really enjoy it.

  22. I would definitely be interested in seeing a tutorial about making this. That is so cool!

  23. Hi, can you please make a tutorial for macrame door knob hanger? I am just starting with macrame though when i was younger i have made me a hundred or so ‘friendship bracelets’ but ut has been a very long time and i see that there are so much more to this kind of skill that just plain bracelets. Thanks a lot.

  24. This was very popular 35 – 40 years ago! I use to make owls, one of my favorites! I like the natural jute instead of the bright colors. The tutorials would be a good refresher for me and bring back a lost art for those who have never done it! I like!

  25. Just found your post and ooh, love this owl (well, i love anything about owls). Would love to learn how to do this so i can teach some kids my small (homeschool) art class. Thank you so much!

  26. I would love the tutorials. On thursday we and a few other mum’s teach the kids on school some crea things and I’ll try to teach them macrame and this owl looks perfect for that.

  27. Love the owl, do you have an infinity dcarf paytern using macrame. I like somr of the looser knots for a scarf.

  28. Would love to make this with my daughter. The link doesn’t seem to work for me, any other way I can get the pattern for your awesome rainbow owl.
    Great work and Thanks

  29. I am always looking for macrame patterns and clicked on the icon, but was directed to a radio station labeled Moscow /University of Idaho. Don’t feel safe visiting that site again
