You can make a volcano using this recipe by taking a small container (like a baby food jar) and building a volcano shaped mountain around it with playdough. Add your mixture and hey presto you have a mini volcano!

  1. Wow, just did this with my daughter this morning and what a success! Absolutely brilliant! Thank you and keep them coming 🙂

  2. Thanks you lot – glad you enjoyed it! Moxielisa you should definitely give it a bash, my son was absolutely gobsmacked – the look on his little face was priceless!

Glad you like the piccy’s Azra. I’m in love with my camera and really enjoy taking photos!

Azra and Kari – I have added you to my list of ‘You create’ links 😉

  3. Weeee! Can’t wait to give this a try! Hmmm. On second thought, maybe I’ll wait until it warms up and we can do it outside, because my littlest ones will not respect the boundaries of a tray. Liquid anything is intended to be splashed about, evidently.

  4. This reminds me of the bubble paintings my preschool class used to make.

Take some water and mix in some food coloring and some liquid soap. Stick in a straw. Let the kids blow up some nice large bubbles. Now lay a piece of paper on the bubbles. Don’t drop it down, just hold it against the bubbles and let them break against it.

You’ll get a print of the bubbles. It’s quite nice. And if you let them dry, you can repeat the same thing with a second color.

This is NOT for kids too young to understand the concept and differentiate between blowing bubbles out and using a straw to drink! Yuck!

If you have a sandbox outside, you can prepare the solution in a tall bottle with red food coloring. Put the bottle in the sandbox and mound the sand around it to the brim of the bottle. Now use a funnel or roll a funnel shape with paper and drop the bicarbonate into the bottle.

Stand back for your “erupting” volcano! What fun!

It can be fun to take out plastic dinosaurs and create a primordial forest of ferns and twigs from the garden to decorate the landscape around your sleeping volcano too.

  6. Thanks Rainey for all your tips…I like the fact that you sound as enthusiastic as i am about it!! I think we are all big kids at heart!

Wabisabi – Yep….I only did it with my eldest son. My little one would have been reeking of vinegar for the rest of the day if I had let him get his hands on it. A 3+ activity I reckon! x

  7. I am so grateful i found your blog! I’m a nanny in the summer and all of your crafts are PERFECT for the kiddos. Thank you so much for being an awesome mom!

  8. Very nice! i think if i try making this potion, my daughter will want to do it every day!!! But as long as they dont drink this its ok!!!! (dont try this with a 17month baby around!)

  9. oooh this is fab! Can’t wait to try it with my son, he might be too little for this for now though (just turned 2).

  10. Hi Coley2123…what a wonderful story. You sound like a very cool nana indeed! I’d never thought of using it at bathtime….I’ll definitely try it out. My sons both LOVE their baths and they hate getting out equally. Sounds like a plan! x

  11. For any other Americans reading this, I wasn’t sure what “Washing Up Liquid” was, so I googled it and it turns out it’s just liquid dish soap. I’m relieved I have all of these ingredients, so we can do this fun activity today. Found it on Pinterest. Thanks for sharing!

  12. My 2 1/2 and 4 year old grandchildren love to do this. We do a bit different though. Put baking soda on cookie sheet with sides…sheet cake pan. Mix food coloring with vinegar in small cups…paper is fine. Then with eye dropper …one for each color so colors don’t mix…they drop onto baking soda. They make designs and have many fizzy areas. This takes more time and if leave to dry is pretty to look at. Well unless they go crazy with color mix it all blends together and ends up blackish in color. Which is okay too. Sometimes they pour on the color mix when all done just to see what it does. Never put soap in so don’t know what it does different?
